Book 2 Hazel. Where to begin? I will start with the positive.

We learned her backstory. Shockingly Kip is behind Hazel's power. Okay maybe not too surprising. Kip is responsible for nearly every bad thing. We also learned how Hazel became so convinced she is a Goddess until she was betrayed by her best friend. It helps create her obsession of being loved yet feared.

Her fighting is unique and makes her final battle with Jane very climatic.

That said her backstory makes her actions in book 1 very bizarre.

Hazel is responsible for the great war. She loves Kip and probably created the religion worshiping Kip. The one principle that sticks out is human superiority. Hazel should be very discriminate against non-humans yet her book 1 plans wants her to be their Goddess. She wants to 'save' the Reynn and dwarfs.

Even more bizarre is she somehow reclaimed her ruling power in the human empire. She is one of the most powerful nobles. Why trade that position for a ruling position over the reynn or dwarfs. She should be focusing on Adam's position.

Futhermore she is very impatient and hot-headed. The notion she somehow quietly inserting herself into power is questionable. I know she did with the drawfs but that was implied to be only a few weeks. I can't believe she will tolerate years or more being undercover.

Finally knowing she is 500 years old and she still hasn't accomplished her goal makes her seem laughable incompetent. Jane wasn't around to stop her. She had her full power with little obstacles. Makes me feel she attempted dozens or more of schemes over the centuries but she failed every time.

Her only successful plan was reclaiming her powers. Even then that was more Naught/Welkin's plan. Still congrats Hazel you got your powers back, and now can continue more centuries of failed schemes. She got very lucky that she actually got a powerup.

I still enjoy her as a character but alot of her successes are more or less given to her. She relies so much on Kip's power and her own plans seem so short-sighted.
